Thanksgiving Assignment
Nov. 22, 2013
Hurray! Thanksgiving Break is here! I hope your families have a wonderful and (hopefully) relaxing time together. We are wrapping up our IB Ancient Civilizations unit and I am giving one piece of homework over break.
For our final project, students are to create a three dimensional model or diorama to show how an ancient civilization contributed to modern day society and technology. Your student could focus on an invention (like the wheel, or paper) or an idea (type of government, philosophy, etc.) In their project, they must answer three questions:
1. How is it connected to other things?
2. How is it changing?
3. How does it work? What is its purpose?
Over break, students are required to complete the plan only. They are to plan through a paragraph and drawing a diagram.
Please see the attached documents for more information.
If you have any questions, please send me an e-mail. I will be out of town for part of the week.
Thanks!
Carly Block

Reading during the holidays
Nov. 11, 2013
Brown's Literacy Committee would like to help bridge the gap between the holiday hustle and the true gift of the holidays... time with family to read. Monday, Nov 18th at 5:15 at Brown we will be hosting a Reading Roundtable to help provide parents a toolbox of tricks to keep their readers motivated over the holidays. There will be a short introduction on the importance of reading at home and how to foster the love of reading. We will then shift into a roundtable setting where parents will share their ideas with other parents.
Thank you,
Brown's Literacy Committee
****please see attached flyer****

Homework and Writing Rubrics
Nov. 1st, 2013
The Third Grade teachers have decided to focus on specific skills and send homework home for Math and Writing every Monday, due on Friday. If for any reason, there is other homework, it will be recorded in your child's planner. This will most likely be incomplete classroom work.
Math - Assessed Mathematical Thinking (AMT) - students will need to answer the problem correctly, SHOW their thinking, and also EXPLAIN their thinking using step-by-step directions. A rubric will be attached to every problem so you can see the expectations.
Writing - A weekly Expository writing prompt will be coming home. Students must plan their writing and then write a paragraph on a piece of notebook paper. The expectations for a Proficient and Advanced paragraphs will be on each prompt. Also, please see below for an example of a Proficient writing piece.

Personal Timeline and November Newsletter
November 1st, 2013
To go along with our current unit, Where We Are in Place and Time, your child received an assignment to create a Personal Timeline. This information came home with them on Wednesday, October 30th. Your child will create a "rough draft" of their timeline on the back of the assignment sheet. They must have at least 5 events that took place before they were born (labeled on the timeline with "B.M". - before me) and at least 5 events that took place after them were born (labeled on the timeline with "A.B." - after birth). After your child is done with the rough draft, they may redo it on poster board, cardboard, or even the computer - and even can add pictures or photos. They are due on Tuesday, November 5th and students will be presenting them to the class on that day.
Also, please see the attached November Newsletter for the 3rd grade.
Thanks!
